If you asked the average person off the street what health insurance brokers do they probably wouldn’t know. The fact is that they are the people you talk to when you need help with this area of coverage. They are salespeople, but they are also informed individuals who let us know about coverage and what we need to be adequately insured.

Having this title is not an easy feat. The person who wants to take on this job title must do a great amount of extensive studying in various fields of this business. There are different levels of testing, all of which must be satisfactorily completed in order to progress to the next one. The final exam determines if the applicant has gained sufficient knowledge to be licensed. But in most areas, the learning does not stop there. Additional courses must be taken to update the individual in policy changes and shifts within the industry. Being kept up to date is professionally crucial.

There are many different facets of issuing policies and each agent must be well versed in all of them, even though they typically specialize in a certain area of the business. They never know what the customer’s needs will be so a broad spectrum of knowledge is required. There is the chance that they will not offer the type of coverage that a customer needs so instead of losing the potential business they have to be able to offer a suitable plan. This is why many brokers are licensed in different states- to offer a more extensive assortment of coverages, since the guidelines typically differ from state to state.

Research shows that the typical person in this position is a male and usually older. More than likely they have sales or business experience and often times have had a previous career in a like position. Since they make their money by commission off of the sale of policies, it may take some time to generate enough of a client base to provide a good living. If they stay in this field long enough, health insurance brokers can make a very lucrative living and even be forced to hire others to assist in their daily tasks.
